3 month Check-in

Monday, December 21, 2009

I have been dieting for 3 months now...So how am I doing?

All I can say is I am doing great!

  • Down over 40lbs!
  • Down 8" on my waist!
  • Down two pants sizes
  • tons more energy
  • eating foods I love (with portion control)
  • not missing anything!!!
  • confident going into the future 3 months!
I have gone through half of the holiday season now with out ever losing ground...that means I have never gained a pound in any weigh-in so far!

I feel like I can face Christmas with confidence. We are traveling this holiday to my hometown to see our families...being away from home is a challenge as it is...but I have a plan...

My strategies:
  • Know what's in my food.
  • Track every calorie I eat
  • know my portion sizes
  • going for walks while I'm away from...why not stroll down memory lane?
  • On the road, hit fast food restaurant where I know what I'm eating! Get nutrition booklets if need be!
  • Don't put too much pressure on myself and enjoy the holiday
Have a Happy Holiday!

Fast Food Fix - Panda Express

Friday, December 11, 2009

I don't think I could keep with a diet long term if I could never eat the things I love...and some of those things are Fast Food! I could have lived on it!
But obviously, the calories in most items bought at chain restaurants...way unacceptable.

My goal is to know what I'm eating by check nutritional info and eating what I like but in the proper moderation and portion. Heck, if I can sustain on a frozen dinner, I can eat half of a fast food meal and be happy.

So, I plan on sharing with you my great Fast Food Fixes! This time let's go to Panda Express and get our Chinese on!

The trick here...get the Kid's Meal!!! I love love love Orange Chicken...but the Standard portion is 400 cals all by itself! Add a second side and double that...then there's the rice! You are walking out the door eating well over...
1000 cals!!!

Save tons of cals and go for the Kid Portion at 310! Eat half of the steamed rice (a full kid's portion is 260) you are only adding 130 cals...bringing the whole meal to...
440 cals!

Not a meal to eat every day (I generally try to keep meals below 400) but if it's a night when you need that fix...this is a sensible way to get the foods you love and not kill that number on the scale.

Yummm!

The Dreaded Before Picture...

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

I have been having a hard time wanting to go public with my "before" picture because there was some major denial going on...part of me doesn't want to admit that I let it get that out of hand...and I'm still not ready to admit the numbers.
But I thought it was about time I showed your my progress! As of yesterday, I have lost 39 pounds so far! I am so excited to have lost in the 40's next week! I lost 3.7lbs this week!

So here is a picture taken of me on the 4th of July, 2009. I was very unhappy at that point and feeling horrible. In fact, I almost passed out from standing up in the sun for too long that day, which I explained away as an intolerance for the heat...but I think it was really an intolerance to my fat!

The "Not Quite After" shot is from today!

I wish I could say that 40lbs is halfway there...but halfway is in my sights! I am hoping to hit halfway by New Year's or soon thereafter.

Diet Must Have...Water Mug

Friday, December 4, 2009

I try to drink copious amounts of water every day as part of my weight loss plan but I noticed that when I ditched the plastic water bottle (for environmental reasons) I wasn't remembering to drink enough.
Those ready to drink bottles with 2 glasses of water in them are convenient but not essential. You can pre-fill those cool stainless steel water bottles and have your daily need ready to grab.

But what I use is an Insulated Water Mug that I bought at a Weight Watchers meeting about 3 years ago.
The bonuses of using this as my go-to water receptacle are the big fat straw which make chugging down 32oz of water a lot easier, the insulated design keeps my ice water cold (did you know ice water speeds up your metabolism?) and right on the side, it has the measurments so you know for sure how much you are drinking.

I have no idea is WW even sells these or if you have to go to a meeting to buy one...I found 1 on ebay...but it was much more expensive than if you drop by your local WW meeting and see if they'd sell you one. I think they are around $5!

If you'd rather just hit Target or Wally World...I'm sure they have something comparable. Go big, big straw and if it holds at least 32oz...that's a plus!

Happy Drinking (and peeing, LOL)

PS...on a weigh-in day, I try and get 3 of these in before I weigh at 7pm. But stop drinking around 6 so I can *cough* expel the extra water weight...

Post Thanksgiving Weigh-in

Tonight was our family weigh-in night and you know that I was worried about whether or not I would lose or (gasp) gain!

Well, I still lost! 2.5lbs!!!
I'm now down 36lbs officially!

I'm hoping to be down 45lbs by Christmas...but I'll settle for 40! LOL.

Luckily there are no more major temptations until the big "X".

Hope you all did ok with the holiday too!

Thanksgiving Wrap-up

Monday, November 30, 2009

Thanksgiving was my first major road-block since I started dieting. I went in confident and with a strategy. Luckily, I avoided falling off the wagon!

I hosted the meal at my house this year, so I had the opportunity to control the menu but also would have the leftovers...so I needed a plan.

I decided to make lower calorie version of my favorite sides...
Stuffing
Candied Yams

But then there were still Rolls, Cranberry Sauce, Mashed Potatoes, Pumpkin and Lemon Meringue Pie, Gravy and Wine!...definite diet pitfalls.

So how did it actually go, you ask?

Somewhere between good and bad. I had my healthier versions of side (plus seconds!). Had a sliver of each kind of pie, no gravy, no dark meat, light on the mashed taters, plus a turkey sandwich before bed! Oy!

But I unloaded most of the dangerous leftovers on our guests so that all I had left was turkey and veggies.

When all was said and done, I think I had about a 3000 calorie day. More than twice what I eat in a whole day! But in the days preceding, I ate less than I normally eat to give myself a calorie cushion. And in the days since, I have done the same...trying to shave off 100-150cals a day.
Of course, I could bump up the exercise as well, but right now, for me...it's easier to shave calories.

After tomorrows weigh-in we'll see how my strategy worked out (or didn't). I'll keep you in the loop!

The Mental Click

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

In the past, I have been successful dieting and I have been, obviously, very unsuccessful more often.
So what makes one diet work and another diet not work?

The Mental Click.

It's the day when you stop kind of wanting to lose weight and decide that you cannot live another day the way you are living now.

It's when you are ready to stop making excuses for why you are fat...
"I really just love food."
"I don't have the time or money to make healthy food."
"I'm just not motivated."

And that's just what you tell other people...what are you saying to yourself...
"I'll never be skinny."
"I can't lose weight."
"I suck."

The first step in achieving the "Click" is to change your inner dialogue. This should change before you even change your eating...change your thinking.
Find a mantra...I know it sounds lame, but make it a go-to every time you are feeling weak and I swear it works!

Mine is:
"I love my son more than food."

When I'm thinking about eating that thing that I know is WAY bad for me...I tell myself that and I can get past it.

In addition I have a mental checklist of other positive affirmations:
"I take good care of myself"
"Just because I want something, doesn't mean I need it."
"My health is more important to me than food."
etc.

Find ones that work for you...

but not:
"I want to be skinny"
instead:
"I am making myself healthy"

Get it?
Try it when you are thinking of having that diet busting treat...
Once you get that click, I promise, dieting gets soooo much easier. You are making a lifestyle change, so you need a permanent mental change to do it.
